Today in Cait Observes Things

I bought a little used volume on Learning Ancient Greek, AS YOU DO, especially when you've wanted to learn Attic Greek for, like, DECADEs, and have made two abortive attempts at it, and it's summer now so why not try again.

I got Peter Jones Learning Ancient Greek, a little paperback with cartoons and jokes and IT IS SO GREAT OH MY GODS. Like you work your way through the alphabet and transliteration and then you start the grammar and stuff. AND HE MAKES IT SO EASY! JUST. WHAT.

Anyway, things I have learned so far:

* Every time you've found a fucked up alphabetical/linguistic shift into the Roman alphabet and wondered WHAT WERE THEY THINKING, eg. "x" = "ch" THAT COMES FROM FUCKING GREEK.

* Fun fact: You would put an amethyst into your booze to keep from getting drunk. "methe" = alchohol, "a" = not, "amethyst" = "not drunk." FASCINATING, CAPTAIN.
