Gratuitous Cross-Pimpage

So I've been revamping Hal's scifi blog for work, and now present to you Just a Sci-Fi Kid Like Me: Notes from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Research Collection at Texas A&M. I'm going to aim to do two posts there a week. I'm planning on showing off items from the collection, discussing the history of the genre, doing some book and movie reviews, and hopefully talking people into aiding and abetting for content. :D

The first post reblogs links to blog posts about a tour I did last Monday. Links to same are here:

Sci-Fi Excursion to College Station.

Space Squid Travels to College Station.

A Three-Hour Tour, A Three-Hour Tour.

In other news I've had a cold this weekend. I think it's stress just trying to make me shut down and sleep for a while. I have a bunch of work deadlines and things have just been generally stressful, so I've spent most of the past twenty-four hours making tea and cuddling with the animals on the couch. My ADD has been extra-problematic so I've been sitting there with like four books I'm in the midst of reading and thus not getting very far in any of them. (In case you're wondering: Margaret Wander Bonanno's most recent Star Trek novel, Unspoken Truth, Meg Cabot's vampire novel, Insatiable, Cassandra Clare's Clockwork Angel, and Ken Follet's The Pillars of the Earth.)

Because random thoughts are random, I'm really looking forward to this when it comes out next month:

The only description listed thus far is: A new Starfleet Academy series for teens--filled with romance and adventure! This is both vague and amusing, particularly the teen part, because if it's AOS they *have* to touch on the Spock/Uhura romance, which is a teacher/student relationship, which just--yeah. Wow. Unless they make the Kirk/McCoy even MORE canonical, which unlikely, BUT. :D That is all.

Okay I'm going to go back to the couch now. There's a couple of chick-flicks that I think will be more entertaining if viewed through Tylenol and honey darjeeling.

I actually have a feeling that they WILL NOT be touching the Spock/Uhura relationship and instead be focusing on the Kirk/Uhura "UST" as it takes place before the movie and therefore before the outing of that relationship. Possibly even before it began. ::shrugs::

FEEL BETTER! ::squish:: I thought I told you to stop being sick. In fact, if I remember correctly, it was a direct order.
Oct. 3rd, 2010 06:45 pm (UTC)
But Kirk/Uhura don't HAVE UST.
Oct. 3rd, 2010 06:49 pm (UTC)
Hence the quotes. Were we talking right now, I would be using air quotes unironically. It wouldn't be pretty.

I think we're more likely to see Kirk flirting with other female cadets and getting shot down by Uhura.

Regarding S/U, we don't know that they got together while he was her instructor. They might have started seeing each other socially after the end of the semester, or whatever. Anyway, they're adults.

This is true. Not less funny to me. ;)
Oct. 3rd, 2010 10:02 pm (UTC)
And those exactly were my same thoughts, Spock/Uhura is NOT what I would expect to see in a YA novel released under licence from a large American Movie Company. I so want to see about Kirk and McCoy being together as room mates. :) There better be lots of McCoy otherwise I shall have to make pouty face.

Thistle was very kind not to point it out here, but she did it in my post and once seen it can not be unseen. Check out Kirk's rack in the cover. Boy has a nice set of boobies going on there.

*snorts@Kirk's rack* Dude. WTF?

Okay so I'm snooping around the Star Trek books site looking for more info. The second book will be out in Decemeber. Get a load of this:

In The Competitive Edge, Kirk finds out how much of a toll the intense training classes and grueling schedule of academy life is taking on all the cadets, including himself. But some recruits seem better equipped to handle the challenges. Is there something that is giving them an edge? Kirk is determined to find out, especially since one of the cadets with a little something extra is his new girlfriend.

This is why fanfic is beautiful.

*headdesk* Oh dear.

I did suspect we were going to get a revolving door of Kirk the campus bicycle with the whole bit about adventure and romance. Makes me want to get my Trixie Belden's out and re-read them.

On Kirk's rack, we decided that a fanfic with Scotty doing a transport of some cadets ends up with one of the boys with a rack... Scotty could be at the Academy and if he stuffs up like that, they might not have actually met. :D Also in the future there it would be so easy to find attractive bras for those who are a larger size. Cue the Gaila giving Kirk advice on which ones to use...

See I wanna know if the gf is gonna be Carol Marcus or Ruth or some new NPC.

And I'm sure where there's Kirk, there's McCoy.

I was looking out of morbid curiosity to see if they still did open ms submissions for Trek novels, cos if they did, I'd be ON THAT. But either they don't or if they do I couldn't find it.
Oct. 3rd, 2010 10:34 pm (UTC)
I'm sure the new girlfriend will be an OC, can't have the possibility of sort of messing up the film canon.

They are such co-dependents together aren't they?

What else I would really like answered is why the jumpsuits for the KM test have little hooks on the back of them. Do they hang up the cadets when they are finished with them?
Oct. 3rd, 2010 10:37 pm (UTC)
Well remembering how everyone went flying in Wrath of Khan, I'm assuming they are some kinda safety mechanism? Maybe even like the anti-grav hooks in Ender's Game?

"Kirk is determined to find out, especially since one of the cadets with a little something extra is his new girlfriend."

Okay, once I stopped laughing I had to roll my eyes. This actually isn't unexpected. I mean, that's the way TOS Kirk was. HOWEVER, they just went out of their way so much to show how differently AOS Kirk approached relationship. I feel we've regressed. >_>

I know, I'm pathetically in need of Star Trek stuff. The second novel will come out in December and then two more in early 2011.

As for Clockwork Angel, I'm only a few chapters in. I think it's stronger plot/character-wise than the first Mortal Instruments book, FWIW, but I've also been able to put it down without angsting about it, which tends to be sort of a meh sign.

I think the problem with the fic is that everyone is preoccupied with putting the finishing touches on their stbbs. Whereas the next month will be filled with awesome fics.

And yeah, I TOTALLY agree on reading it because of the Draco trilogy. (I still have those as PDFs on a flash drive.) I'll prob do a review of the book when I finish, if not on this blog then on my work blog. :)

Um Ditto. I was talking about this with Nikki a week or two ago and we where like how are they going to handle Spock and Uhura, which it totes student teacher and not exactly teen appropriate. Lulz. Unless they do it like oh well it's Starfleet he enlisted before she did but they are like the same age. But I doubt that will fly.

I would die if they actually made it Kirk/McCoy, but also doubtful, but it would still be awesome. I mean so much more fotter for fic writers if they actually are roommates. But again doubtful although it does take place in the future in SF.

I am paranoid it's going to be Kirk/Uhura because of the cover. Which would be a big bag of no.

I do hope your drugs and chick flicks make you feel better *hugs*

(also kirk totally looks like he has boobs in the cover art.)

Oct. 3rd, 2010 10:48 pm (UTC)
Yeah Nikki and I were commenting on that. :)

But yeah, they need to have at least ONE book focusing on Kirk and McCoy. They have to bridge the gap from Jim's wtf look on the shuttle to McCoy's puppy eyes in the assembly. ONLY DESPERATELY.
Oct. 3rd, 2010 10:54 pm (UTC)
I was reading what you posted about book II and I bet since McCoy is in Medical he will be in the book that involves crazy super human making drugs.

Or maybe it will be a totally Sherlock and Watson thing and McCoy will be the awesome not side kick but best buddy who helps him solve problems he.

But seriously they do need to explain drinking buddies the looks of love.

Mwahaha a Kirk/McCoy Holmes & Watson story would be awesome!!!!!!
