On Knowing When to Run

At the risk of being all dramatic and shit, but I'm starting to wonder if this is what it's like living in parts of the Middle East now or what it was like in Europe in World War II.

How do you know when it's a good time to get out of dodge?

I am appalled by the sudden flood of articles in the papers about people moving to Canada. I don't know if they will, but there's a shocking certainty that loads certainly want to.

Not that I am blame them. Whether it's for the excellent health care system, core liberal values, fear of an imminent draft, or you just have a pioneering urge to move to the middle of nowhere, Canada's a nice place.

All the same, I want to remain a liberal and right where I am. Sure, DC is full of utterly frightening people--and not just those in the White House--but there's cool stuff too. I love the Folger and LC libraries. I love getting coffee and croissants at Union Station. I love museum-hopping any odd afternoon, and running around Chinatown and Georgetown, and watching weird movies at midnight on Dupont.

Plus there's the cool big American things too: I love the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. I love having a holiday devoted to eating turkey with loved ones. I love fireworks and apple pie in the summer.

Please tell me those things aren't going anywhere?
