Title: The Thousandth Interview
Author: caitri
Rating: G
Pairings: Kirk/McCoy
Word Count: 383
Summary: A press conference. The boys. What could happen? Inspired by these photos at jim_and_bones.
Disclaimer: I know this may come as a shock, but I am not, amazing as it may seem, Gene Roddenberry, J.J. Abrams, Paramount or Bad Robot. Just so you know.

Leonard scowls at the dozen or so vidcams, all with their “eyes” on them. They’ve been at this for seven and a half hours already, and that’s exactly seven and a half hours too long.

Godammit, Starfleet has a PR department, why aren’t they handling this?

“Federation Network News,” one journalist identifies herself. “Doctor McCoy, is it true that you’re the one responsible for Cadet Kirk’s presence onboard the Enterprise during the crisis?”

Leonard coughs, throat dry despite the multitude of glasses of water he’s drunk. “Yes, that’s true,” he says slowly. Because I’ve only said it a half dozen times, you idiots.

“And is it also true,” the journalist continues, “that you and Kirk are involved in a romantic relationship?”

“Um.” Leonard falters as a surprised murmur rolls through the crowded room. “Well—“
Shit. He tries to look at Jim through the corner of his eye, see what his response is. They’d never discussed—they thought they’d been so discreet— “Um…”

Jim leaps in, as he always does, and Leonard exhales slightly in relief that it’s not all down to him. “Let me answer that.” He shoots Leonard a little grin, raising an eyebrow to ask him silently, You ready? Leonard feels himself nod, his own lips twitching in response. Jim turns back to the reporters. “Yes, it’s true.”

The surprised murmurs become an out and out cacophony at that. Leonard supposes he can’t blame them; a love story has got to be a refreshing change from death and destruction.

The FNN reporter stands up to be heard. “Starfleet only considers joint assignment requests from partners with formalized unions,” she states. “Do the heroes of the Federation have anything to say about that?”

Jim grins impishly as he turns back to Leonard. “I don’t know, Bones,” he says, and Leonard recognizes that wild glint in those blue eyes all too well. “We got something to say about that?”

Leonard feels a smile spread across his own face in answer. Yeah, it’s only been three years, and yeah, this is impulsive and probably a bad idea, but godammit, he and Jim were almost separated before, and he doesn’t want that feeling ever again. So he takes in a deep breath, lets it out shudderingly. “Yeah,” he says. “Yeah, I guess we do.”

“I don’t know, Bones. We got something to say about that?” -- *snorts*... because that is so totally how Kirk would ask the question too.
