Slash Text!

So I've been re-watching Star Trek: The Animated Series since it was recently released on DVD. I remembered it fondly from when I was a kid, and it holds up phenomenally well. Anyhow, tonight I watched the episode "Mudd's Passion" where Harry Mudd is selling love crystals. He tricks Christine Chapel into taking one, and of course she uses it on Mr. Spock, who falls in love with her. Hijinks ensue. Anyhow, there's an awesome part where Kirk gets all uber-jealous as a side effect. And he and Spock put their arms around each other. "You're my best friend, Jim." "I'm lucky to have a friend like you, Spock."

SLASH TEXT!!!!

Of course the best is from the TOS "Shore Leave."

NOTE THE ACTUAL TEXT:

Yeah, the subtext is text in a LOT of TOS actually. It's kind of amazing that they claim to be clueless. If you rewatch TOS and the movies and keep the mindset of "Spock is totally in love with Jim"--it's kind of amazing really.

I forget which episode but there's one where Spock has a line like "When I feel friendship for you, I feel ashamed." As far as I'm concerned, that puts the issue is great big honking lights.

Gene Roddenberry slyly addressed the issue also in his novelization for Star Trek 1. There's a part where Kirk is narrating and he talks about a rumor that he and Spock were lovers, and he's like, 'I've never talked to Spock about it, but I've always found my best gratification in women.' And of course people like me are all, "...Dude, that means you have a point of COMPARISON."

I'm also going to email you an interesting paper on the topic too. =)
